Academy of Creative and Performing Arts: Vocal Music

Hosted at Pennsville Memorial High School

Students participating in the Academy of Creative and Performing Arts: Vocal Music are enrolled in a double period in the core curriculum each year.  One is their major performance ensemble—the Eagle Singers—and the other is an Advanced Music Class.  In addition, students receive a private or small group voice lesson with a vocal specialist on a regular basis.

This program is designed for the serious minded student who wishes to fully explore their artistic major.  It is assumed that all students participating in the academy are considering attending college as music majors or have a serious interest in music.  Students explore various aspects of subjects included in typical college courses.  This includes a basic understanding of the historical development of music, music theory, composing and arranging, elementary piano playing, ear training, and conducting.  Studies in the Advanced Music course are taught using a music technology lab.  This introduces the student to the world of music theory and composition using state-of-the-art MIDI keyboard, as well as composition software and equipment.

Students enrolled in this academy participate in recitals as well as performances given by their major music ensemble.  In addition to a variety of shows, plays, and concerts that take place at Pennsville Memorial High School, students will participate in a Senior Recital.

An audition is required during the admissions process for this academy.  The audition is similar to that required for the All South Jersey Junior High School Chorus (run by the South Jersey Choral Directors Association (SJCDA).  Specific details are available on the web at http://www.sjcda.com under “Audition Requirements.”  Students who have been selected for All-South Jersey are exempt from the audition.
