Construction
Technology
The
Construction Technology Program is designed to provide students
with the basic knowledge and skills required to be successful
in the construction trades industry. While the program encompasses
the construction trades, its focus is on carpentry. The program
courses are designed to prepare students with entry level skills
for initial employment in the field, entry into an apprenticeship
program or into a collegiate level preparation program.
Development of the curriculum for this program
contains significant content contributed by the New Jersey
Carpenter’s Union, a program advisory committee made
up of craftsmen from the field and by successful building contractors.
The curriculum has also been reviewed and endorsed by the Builders
League of South Jersey.
Program Outcome
Many graduates
begin their careers in construction and carpentry with local
employment in housing-related industries doing such work as
installing vinyl and cedar siding, sheetrock, door and window
replacement, framing, home renovations, kitchen/bathroom remodeling,
etc. With experience, this work offers a good foundation for
management work or for becoming an independent contractor.
Graduates also join the union sponsored carpentry apprenticeship program,
which enables them to work on commercial projects at higher wages. Students
may elect to continue their education and study architecture or civil
and structural engineering at the college level.
