The Salem County Board for Vocational Education appoints a citizen's advisory board to provide community input to the Board of Education and administration. The SCVTS Advisory Board assists the district in achieving its mission, which is to provide Salem County residents with educational programs leading to employment, preparation for higher education leading to employment, and for lifelong learning.

The efforts of the SCVTS Advisory Board are directly supported by over 200 county residents, who serve on various career and technical, academic cluster and special education program and Program Advisory Committees.

The Advisory Board takes an active role in assisting with the implementation of the strategic vision plan, and will continue to assist the district in implementing the two-year action plan.

The Advisory Board also operates five standing committees:

Community Information and Community Relations - This committee is charged with assisting the board and leadership team in promoting district programs and services, identifying value addeds for these programs and services, assisting with the establishment of focus groups to test marketing and promotional information, marketing strategies and student recruitment initiatives. This committee is also charged with seeking general community input regarding existing programs, services and perception of the district.

Curriculum and Instruction - This committee is charged with reviewing curriculum for appropriateness, relativity and to identify areas that program committees may need to study further. The committee has responsibility to review the district's program evaluation models and to make recommendations. This committee annually reviews selected programs and services in accordance with board policy and statutory requirements.

Human Resources and Staff Development - This committee is responsible to review the district's equity plan, organizational structure and staff development program. The committee is expected to assist the district's leadership team staff development committee representatives in identifying staff development needs and in planning appropriate activities. The committee may be asked to review various staff development programs, evaluation format and relevant data.

Student Services, Safety and Activities - This committee examines student services, student activities and the student information system. The committee is charged with the responsibility to evaluate student activity and student socialization programs. Teh committee also serves to provide advisement and input for the development and maintenance of a safe, nurturing learning environment. This includes, but is not limited to, safety in career and technical education and academy programs, general school safety and security and student health issues. The latter includes a review of the district security and crisis plans, safety audits as may be applicable and review of the student health and nursing services plans.

Specialized Programs - This committee will examine and review the academy structure, financing and identify ways to more effectively and efficiently deliver quality career academy opportunities to county students. This committee is also charged with identifying strategies for the district's support systems to be more effectively utilized to serve students with special needs, including those with identified disabilities and/or 504 plans for the purpose of enhancing their success and achievement.
